Let’s Talk About the Infrared Sauna: Why It’s More Than Just a Sweat Session

We all know that sitting in a hot sauna feels good—especially on a stressful day or when your muscles are achy. But what if I told you that the benefits of an infrared sauna go way beyond relaxation and sweating?

Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air around you, infrared saunas use infrared light to warm your body directly. This allows you to get a deep sweat at a lower temperature, making it a more comfortable and sustainable option for many people (yes, even those of us who don’t love the heat!).

Here are a few of my favorite reasons to include infrared sauna therapy as part of a holistic health and wellness routine:

1. Detox Support

We’re exposed to toxins daily—from our environment, food, water, and even personal care products. Sweating is one of the body’s natural ways of detoxifying, and infrared saunas can help you sweat more efficiently. Infrared heat penetrates deeply into tissues, mobilizing toxins like heavy metals, plastics, and pesticides—things your liver and kidneys are already working hard to process.

2. Improved Circulation and Cardiovascular Support

The gentle heat from an infrared sauna increases heart rate and blood flow, much like moderate exercise. This can support healthy blood pressure, oxygen delivery, and nutrient transport throughout the body. It’s like giving your cardiovascular system a little workout—without stepping foot on a treadmill.

3. Muscle Recovery and Pain Relief

If you deal with chronic pain, inflammation, or sore muscles (hello, perimenopause joint pain or post-workout soreness), infrared sauna therapy may offer relief. The heat helps improve circulation, reduce stiffness, and increase oxygenation to tissues. It’s especially helpful for people with fibromyalgia, arthritis, or just a lot of tension.

4. Stress Reduction and Nervous System Reset

I always tell my patients: healing requires rest. But with our go-go-go culture, most of us are living in a constant state of fight-or-flight. The sauna is a great place to downshift. The warmth relaxes your body, calms your mind, and helps shift your nervous system into “rest and digest” mode. Plus, that post-sauna glow? It’s real.

5. Skin Health and Glow

Infrared heat stimulates collagen production, increases circulation to the skin, and helps clear pores through sweat. Over time, this can lead to softer, clearer, and more radiant skin. It’s like giving your skin a deep clean from the inside out.

6. Metabolism & Weight Support

While I wouldn’t say infrared sauna therapy is a weight loss tool on its own, it can support your metabolism. That increase in heart rate and circulation boosts caloric burn temporarily and may help reduce inflammation that contributes to weight resistance.

How Often Should You Use It?

Most people benefit from 2-4 sessions a week, depending on goals and tolerance. Sessions typically last 20–45 minutes. Always hydrate well before and after, and listen to your body. (And of course, check with your provider first if you have any medical conditions.)

Final Thoughts

Infrared sauna is one of those “stacked” wellness tools—it checks a lot of boxes: detox, circulation, skin, stress relief, and inflammation support. If you’re looking for something that feels good and works behind the scenes to support your health goals, this might be the missing piece in your routine.
